HMK 561 Electric Bicycle Concept
Mar 12th
Most electric bikes are fairly sordid affairs, little more than an ordinary bicycle with a motorized hub, a strap-on battery pack and regenerative braking capabilities (if you’re lucky). Not this HMK 561 electric bicycle concept, which took home an iF Design Award for some seriously forward thinking. It’s not just the stylish forward rake of this juiced cruiser that’s innovative, it’s the frame — composed completely of a conductive carbon fiber weave that allows the bike’s body to not just pass electricity to the motors, but actually store it like a giant capacitor. Factor in integrated lights and a pinch of that aforesaid regenerative braking at each axle, and you’ve just about got the bicycle of our dreams. Oh, and did we mention a prototype has already been built? Yeah.
Stihl’s autumn calendar automatically rips through to tomorrow
Mar 11th

Unless they’re incredibly quiet or potentially explosive, you won’t find us waxing poetic (or even prosaic) about leaf blowers. But if a company that produced leaf blowers made a motorized calendar that tore off its own pages?
Terrace Bar Seating pods
Mar 10th
I’m lovvving these Terrace Bar Seating pods by Sekhar Roy, a student at the Florence Design Academy.
The swooping arm holds interchangeable light fixtures, and while there’s a chance someone sitting near the center might bump their head on the arm, I’d be willing to watch my guests do that time and again just so I could have this thing in my house.

Santa’s Little Helper – Paul McCarthy
Sep 26th
Over the past four decades, Paul McCarthy’s work has gone from intimate performance videos to spectacular public sculptures — all without sacrificing its unnerving psychosexual tone. While the artist’s recent show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York surprised many with its unornamented structuralism, its restraint was comically upstaged by the unmooring of his giant inflatable dog turd at Switzerland’s Zentrum Paul Klee, which left a trail of downed power lines in its wake. It was as if McCarthy’s art had unleashed on the Swiss countryside the cartoonish extravagance that had been put on the back burner for the Whitney.
Not that McCarthy hasn’t paid tribute to the twisted pop-mythological deities of the American psyche. “I’m interested in caricatures — from Miss Piggy to Popeye to Santa Claus — that are cultural fabrications,” observes the 63-year-old artist from his LA home. “Santa is one that I’ve hung on to longer, that I repeat more. There’s the whole thing of Christmas and consumption and commodity, and its relationship to capitalism and Western culture and Americana. The character itself is this roly-poly patriarch with a beard — almost a godlike figure.” In fact, he notes, one of his earliest childhood drawings is of Santa Claus.
