Old’s Cool

Thursday
Mar 13,2008

Seeing David’s earlier post, titled ’Flaming Logos‘, it was clear that a lot of work was put into recreating those 80s motion graphics logos. Plenty of 3D and a good dose of Flame or After Effects I’d wager.

After Effects, Schmafter Effects. Check out how they did this back in the day…

Who needs Maya when you’ve got 6 craftsmen sweating night and day over 3 months, a motion control camera from the ark, and some old school ingenuity.

Hey, I know it’s a 10 minute video, but trust me it’s worth it just for the soundtrack… Altogether now, “Pay a little closer attention to detail…All the things you’re taking for granted… Are just as important as what you see”

Bollo vs The Honey Monster

We all know ad agencies appropriate, often inappropriately, and here’s another example – Bray Leino’s new commercial for Sugar Puffs is strikingly similar to The Mighty Boosh’s Soup Song. Take a look.

Whether Crimping (A form of scat singing characterized by lines of interconnecting verse usually referencing abstract imagery, concepts and characters.) is a gift to culture that can be freely used to sell sugared cereal is really a question for The Mighty Boosh – perhaps they will crimp an answer for us?

There are so many ways this is wrong. I’m pretty sure that The Mighty Boosh was not asked permission. Secondly, TMB aren’t credited with being the inspiration for the ad. Thirdly – the huge majority of comments on YouTube are upset Boosh fans, so they’ll be eating Corn Flakes.

Unfortunately when advertising appropriates culture it’s a one-way street. Ask yourself this: If Sugar Puffs invented Crimping, would they allow The Mighty Boosh to use it without permission?

We love the 80's. Music, tv shows, movies, clothing, everything gets us all nostalgic. But we can revive the 80's everyday by using it as reference.

The 80's were a decade of overflows of colors and style. Citric colors, big glasses and those long Nike shoes. Lots of kicking butt bands like A-ha, Oingo Boingo, Erasure, Depeche Mode making kicking butt video clips, wearing kicking butt clothes and being kicking butt cool. Yeah. We love the 80's, and know, let's get inspired by it! ;D

(A few little times I actually thank God for not living on the 80's...)

I've just finished my new Photoshop tutorial and this time it won’t have lighting effects, with glows and sparks all over, however its is again a request from a user. Tom suggested if we could create a brushed aluminum texture similar to the Apple products.

There are some nice techniques applied on this tutorial, and I think it can be easily used to interface design and web design projects.

The tutorial will be published at psdtuts.com soon I think. But I took some more time and created 2 desktop wallpapers and 2 iPhone wallpapers.

To Beat or Not to Beat

To Beat or Not to Beat Logo

The logo literally “questions” the old-fashioned parenting methods. It’s a strong concept which made it possible for the execution to be a matter of just a few drafts.

To Beat or Not to Beat logo drafts

It was originally created as an illustration for a chapter in a parenting handbook called “Sure Ways to Spoil Your Child” (“Kako da najlakše upropastite rođeno dete”, Serbian) by Nadežda Milenković. The symbol was also used as a poster for the reprinted issue.

To Beat or Not to Beat poster

The logo was featured in Worldwide Identity by Robert L. Peters (Rockport), on Icograda and Belgrade Design Week ’06.

Aleksandra worked as a designer and Senior Art Director for several local and regional advertising agencies – McCann Erickson, Synergy Leo Burnett, Publicis Group, Communis, Pristop Ljubljana (Slovenia) and others.

We don't get to see much of how to make cool fonts from scratch but at Sam Alfano's there's a whole section about it! Pretty cool site, pretty cool tips, like this one.

Most of us love vintage stuff. From pictures to movie posters and colors. But how about a cool vintage leaf font? Sure! Too bad we don't get to use fonts like this very often. I would be nice! Anyways, check out some images of the process, and remember, to read the process, the full article, visit Sam Alfano's website. He's got it all! ;)

Finding neat solutions for advertising problems is one of the steps on making a great ad. A big step. So, what would you come up with to the problem: "Music has no boundaries"?

Travel stamps! Yes... this guys came up with this awesome design, of Bob Marley, Elton John and the Beatles, all made up of travel stamps. Really an unique design and idea! The agency Gitam BBDO from Tel-Aviv signs the Ad. Congrats! You will find this and many other advertisings at AdGoodness. Drop a visit! ;)

Photoshop Disasters

Monday
Mar 10,2008

Isn't it freaky when you're reading a magazine, and then you notice that the cover model is missing her belly button? Or maybe that foxy red head has got the longest fingers in history? Yeah, that's more common than you might imagine.

Photoshop Disasters is a blog dedicated to... photoshop disasters. There are pages and pages of those freakish images of semi-nude babes that you think are hot... until you notice a third hand... geez, disgusting. Check it out!

Castles In The Air

OMG. That's a three handed lady!!! I wonder if the dude noticed that little detail.

Highlander

Now we all know that they took the pictures without swords. I mean, why?? That's not to hard to hold a sword during a photo shoot.

Jordache

Nippleless. If that is even a word.

Maxis

The title for this one cracked me up: "Model Distorts Space-Time Continuum". Lol.

These are only a few of it. Please, visit the blog to check all the disasters!

If you're searching photos or textures for your non-commercial artworks or to create some images in Photoshop,  kavewall.com/stock and photo-libre.fr offer some amazing royalty free pictures, which you can use for all your non-commercial works.

Here's some pictures to make your mouth's watering :

from kavewall (hundreds of images) :

Justice, a French duo, makes awesome music for sure. If you are a sucker for electro house, you'll love this. If you are a sucker for electro house, AND a design junkie, then this will blow your mind.

It's been a long time since I saw a new design for video clips. I mean, I really like those animation ones, but dude, this one is freaking awesome. It has all kinds of made up logos, pretty cool ones. This video was recommended by an user. Wanna recommend one? Drop a comment!
