Adobe Releases Leopard Support Info

Sunday
Oct 28,2007

Adobe has just posted a PDF to their website regarding Leopard compatibility. It Looks like most of the CS3 packages will be fine after an update or 2, but CS2 and Older (including Macromedia Studio 8) are marked as “Likely to encounter issues to which there is no solution” and “Not Designed” [for Leopard]. If you are running CS3 Web Standard, it looks like you are good to go, while most of the other packages require updates, however, some of the individual CS3 apps are OK. (including Photoshop and Illustrator).

Thanks, pilotzen

Brandon on “The Long Wow”

Sunday
Oct 28,2007

Sneaking in last week was Brandon’s essay on The Long Wow. An excerpt:

Deep customer insights and empathetic design pave the pathway to wow moments. By diving deep into a customer’s life and closely observing their behaviors, you can wow your customer by addressing needs that they’d never be able to articulate. By immersing yourself in the customer’s wider world of emotion and culture, you can wow them by attuning the offering to practical needs and dimensions of delight that normally go unfulfilled.

When a company uses empathetic design methods to create moments of wow over and over again, it bonds with customers at a level far beyond the realm of gold-colored plastic cards. OXO introduced over 50 products every year, wowing customers with purposeful improvements through the re-imagination of common culinary tools.

Few companies consistently translate rich insights from their customers’ lives into new and better offerings. The few that do can achieve a Long Wow, continuously delivering wow moments and building a true, deep loyalty that transcends traditional loyalty programs.

I was messing around tonite with some foliage shapes and scraped together a small set for a freebie. Everyone liked the last set of foliage vectors, and these are a little more detailed, so enjoy. I might release a brush set to make it easier for everyone to make their own soon ; ) Mmmmmm free vectors . . .

Small Comment Boxes Need to Grow Up

Saturday
Oct 27,2007
Call it a pet peeve if you like, but the small comment textareas I see on some blogs are far too small for proper writing and editing. I feel a size of 350 by 150 pixels is about the absolute smallest I care to write in unless I have only a few remarks. Anything smaller is really too difficult to use if I am composing a more in-depth response. A too-small comments box restricts me to four options: to forgo commenting altogether; to struggle through it; to hold back on my comment; or to compose it in a separate program then copy and paste it into the itty-bitty textarea provided by the blogger. I actually prefer none of these.

Screenshots: CS1 Running in Leopard

I promised some of you that I would test CS1 in the new Leopard install and I’m glad to report that (so far) it seems to work fine. Impressive on both Adobe, and Apple’s part in my book, given CS1’s age. I haven’t crunched any huge files yet, but everything I grazed over seemed to be in working order. (I’m only talking about Photoshop and Illustrator here, by the way). You might note that I had CS1 installed on my hard drive and did an “upgrade” to Leopard. I didn’t install CS1 afterwards. Check out the screenshots:

I don’t know what features you may or may not have been looking forward to in Apple’s Leopard release, but me. . . I’m easy to please. All I wanted for Christmas was an EPS preview in Finder. As a designer, not being able to view a thumbnail of EPS files drives me to crazy town, and also wastes a lot of time opening EPS files in Illustrator just to see what’s in them. I installed Leopard earlier tonite and out of all the bells and whistles, the one I wanted just isn’t happening. Oh, and don’t worry, i doesn’t work in Quick Look either. Maybe I’m not understanding something about EPS, (I’d like to hear your thoughts) but I would really like to know why there is never a thumbnail available for this format. A format that designers use very regularly.
